When Tom Cruise uttered the famous line "show me the money!" in the widely acclaimed 1996 movie "Jerry Maguire" he was playing the role of an ambitious sports agent. While his character may be slightly exaggerated from real-life sports agents, it was inspired by the life of Leigh Steinberg, one of the most successful sports agents of all time.
The tremendously large contracts that today's athlete's receive is largely due to the negotiation skills of the sports agent. Back in the days when Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays were the biggest stars in baseball, there were very few "sports agents" representing the players. While baseball was still a business, most of the profits went into the Owner's pockets.
As television contracts and the financial revenues generated by professional sports started to grow to astronomical numbers, more and more attorneys dedicated their practice to representing athletes and negotiating contracts. Today, everybody wants a piece of the pie and that is why the big business of sports will only grow bigger in the future.
